Whyte in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 1,581 people named Whyte in Ireland, about 0.036% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 548th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 781 men and 798 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Whyte in Ireland
Dublin had the largest share of Whytes, 9.2% (145 people). Next came Galway (135), Antrim (125), Cork (106) and Donegal (106).
Whyte average age in 1911
The average Whyte in 1911 was 29.4 years old, 30.0 for men and 28.8 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Whyte literacy in 1911
Of the Whytes whose literacy was recorded, 80.4% could both read and write, 3.7% could read but not write, and 15.8% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Whyte common first names
The most common male names were John (102), James, Thomas, Patrick and William. For women it was Mary (93), followed by Margaret, Bridget, Annie and Ellen; matching the national top five exactly.
Whyte occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Whyte's census form was "Scholar"; 20.6% (325) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16.7%), general labourer (3.5%), farm labourer (3.4%) and domestic servant (2.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20.3% of all Whytes, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Whyte?
Most Whytes, 66.8%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (15.6%), Anglican (14.5%), Methodist (1.6%) and Plymouth Brethren (0.8%).
