The 1911 Census recorded 1,417 people named O'Hagan in Ireland, about 0.032% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 598th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 668 men and 745 women. (A small number, 4, had no sex recorded.)

Down had the largest share of O'Hagans, 19.3% (274 people). Next came Antrim (214), Louth (213), Derry (210) and Armagh (182).

The average O'Hagan in 1911 was 30.8 years old, 30.1 for men and 31.5 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Men came out slightly ahead, 79.3% reading and writing against 74.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (79), John, Patrick, Hugh and Joseph. For women it was Mary (109), followed by Bridget, Annie, Catherine and Elizabeth.

The most common entry on an O'Hagan's census form was "Scholar"; 17.5% (248) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.2%), general labourer (4%), textile worker (3.5%) and domestic servant (2.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 17.5% of all O'Hagans, followed by textiles & clothing, retail & commerce and domestic service.

O'Hagans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.5% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.6%) and Presbyterian (0.1%).
