A in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 1,412 people named A in Ireland, about 0.032% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 600th most common surname overall. There were noticeably more men than women recorded: 917 men to 394 women. (A small number, 101, had no sex recorded.)

Dublin had the largest share of As, 19.9% (281 people). Next came Cork (201), Kildare (178), Antrim (170) and Tipperary (69).

A average age in 1911
The average A in 1911 was 35.9 years old, 33.7 for men and 43.9 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
A literacy in 1911
Of the As whose literacy was recorded, 82.8% could both read and write, 4.1% could read but not write, and 13.2% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 87.6% reading and writing against 66.9% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Grouped by sector, general labourers accounted for 18.4% of all As, followed by agriculture, domestic service, textiles & clothing and transport.
