The 1911 Census recorded 1,274 people named Warren in Ireland, about 0.029% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 661st most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 597 men and 673 women. (A small number, 4, had no sex recorded.)

Dublin was Warren country: 27.6% of them (351 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Cork (206), Wexford (136), Kerry (75) and Antrim (72).

The average Warren in 1911 was 30.7 years old, 30.4 for men and 30.9 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Warren literacy in 1911
Of the Warrens whose literacy was recorded, 85.3% could both read and write, 2.6% could read but not write, and 12% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (75), William, Thomas, James and George. For women it was Mary (70), followed by Elizabeth, Margaret, Bridget and Catherine.

The most common entry on a Warren's census form was "Scholar"; 20.1% (256) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (8.9%), general labourer (3.6%), domestic servant (3.2%) and farm labourer (3.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.8% of all Warrens, followed by domestic service, retail & commerce and general labourers.
What religion is Warren?
Most Warrens, 54.9%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (37.4%), Methodist (4.2%), Presbyterian (2.2%) and Baptist (0.1%).
