The 1911 Census recorded 1,107 people named Langan in Ireland, about 0.025% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 726th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 549 men and 555 women. (A small number, 3, had no sex recorded.)

Mayo was Langan country: 30.2% of them (334 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Dublin (165), Donegal (125), Galway (81) and Sligo (77).

The average Langan in 1911 was 31.0 years old, 29.9 for men and 32.0 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Langan literacy in 1911
Of the Langans whose literacy was recorded, 74.3% could both read and write, 3.3% could read but not write, and 22.4% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 75.8% reading and writing against 72.7% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (85), Patrick, Michael, James and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (94), followed by Bridget, Annie, Margaret and Ellen; matching the national top five exactly.
Langan occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among Langans was farmer, 19.3% of them (214 people). Next came scholar / student (18.7%), farm labourer (4.3%), domestic servant (2.5%) and general labourer (2.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 24.4% of all Langans, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Langan?
Langans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.6% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.7%).
