The 1911 Census recorded 1,075 people named Christie in Ireland, about 0.025% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 740th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 503 men and 569 women. (A small number, 3, had no sex recorded.)

The average Christie in 1911 was 29.0 years old, 28.9 for men and 29.2 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the Christies whose literacy was recorded, 80.1% could both read and write, 3.9% could read but not write, and 16% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (53), William, James, Robert and Thomas. For women it was Mary (66), followed by Annie, Jane, Elizabeth and Maggie.

The most common entry on a Christie's census form was "Scholar"; 20.7% (222) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (6.7%), textile worker (4.6%), general labourer (3.5%) and domestic servant (2.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 10% of all Christies, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.
What religion is Christie?
The largest religious group among Christies was Presbyterian, at 43.6%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (26.1%), Roman Catholic (24.3%), Methodist (2.9%) and Plymouth Brethren (0.4%).
