Troy in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 1,066 people named Troy in Ireland, about 0.024% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 747th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 545 men and 520 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Troy in Ireland
Waterford had the largest share of Troys, 19.6% (209 people). Next came Dublin (137), Tipperary (134), Offaly (117) and Cork (105).
Troy average age in 1911
The average Troy in 1911 was 29.7 years old, 30.7 for men and 28.6 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Troy literacy in 1911
Of the Troys whose literacy was recorded, 80.5% could both read and write, 2.8% could read but not write, and 16.7% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 81.8% reading and writing against 79.2% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Troy common first names
The most common male names were John (79), Patrick, James, Michael and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (95), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Ellen and Catherine.
Troy occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Troy's census form was "Scholar"; 21.1% (225) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13%), farm labourer (4.9%), general labourer (3.9%) and domestic servant (2.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.7% of all Troys, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Troy?
Troys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.1% of them. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (0.9%) and Anglican (0.8%).
