The 1911 Census recorded 946 people named Kealy in Ireland; roughly one in every 4,600 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 473 men and 471 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)

Kilkenny had the largest share of Kealys, 24.7% (234 people). Next came Carlow (153), Dublin (141), Laois (92) and Galway (51).

The average Kealy in 1911 was 30.2 years old, 30.7 for men and 29.7 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Kealy literacy in 1911
Of the Kealys whose literacy was recorded, 78.8% could both read and write, 5.3% could read but not write, and 16% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (76), James, Patrick, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (90), followed by Margaret, Bridget, Ellen and Catherine.

The most common entry on a Kealy's census form was "Scholar"; 21.2% (201) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (20.5%), farm labourer (5.1%), general labourer (4.9%) and domestic servant (3.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 26.1% of all Kealys, followed by domestic service, general labourers and no occupation / dependent.
What religion is Kealy?
Kealys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.5% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.7%).
