The 1911 Census recorded 877 people named O'liver in Ireland; roughly one in every 5,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 397 men and 475 women. (A small number, 5, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with O'liver in Ireland
Antrim had the largest share of O'livers, 17.6% (154 people). Next came Down (137), Derry (112), Dublin (77) and Tyrone (63).

The average O'liver in 1911 was 28.6 years old, 29.8 for men and 27.7 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
O'liver literacy in 1911
Of the O'livers whose literacy was recorded, 80.3% could both read and write, 3% could read but not write, and 16.4% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 81.5% reading and writing against 79.2% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
O'liver common first names
The most common male names were John (49), William, Thomas, James and Robert. For women it was Mary (38), followed by Margaret, Sarah, Jane and Elizabeth.
O'liver occupations in 1911
The most common entry on an O'liver's census form was "Scholar"; 22% (193) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.4%), general labourer (3.1%), textile worker (3%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12% of all O'livers, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is O'liver?
The largest religious group among O'livers was Anglican, at 33.9%. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (31.9%), Roman Catholic (23.7%), Methodist (5.2%) and Congregationalist (1%).
