The 1911 Census recorded 865 people named Devereux in Ireland; roughly one in every 5,100 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 423 men and 439 women. (A small number, 3, had no sex recorded.)

The Devereuxes were heavily concentrated in Wexford, home to 59.9% of them (518 people). Next came Dublin (129), Tipperary (60), Waterford (40) and Kilkenny (27).

The average Devereux in 1911 was 31.4 years old, 31.3 for men and 31.5 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Devereux literacy in 1911
Of the Devereuxes whose literacy was recorded, 78.4% could both read and write, 5.5% could read but not write, and 16.1% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (74), Patrick, James, Thomas and William. For women it was Mary (77), followed by Bridget, Ellen, Margaret and Catherine.
Devereux occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Devereux's census form was "Scholar"; 19.5% (169) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.6%), general labourer (4%), farm labourer (3.8%) and domestic servant (3.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19.2% of all Devereuxes, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Devereux?
Devereuxes were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.7% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.2%).
