Rush in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 846 people named Rush in Ireland; roughly one in every 5,200 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 415 men and 430 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Mayo had the largest share of Rushes, 21.3% (180 people). Next came Down (154), Roscommon (96), Antrim (83) and Galway (71).

Rush average age in 1911
The average Rush in 1911 was 30.4 years old, 29.5 for men and 31.3 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Rush literacy in 1911
Of the Rushes whose literacy was recorded, 72.2% could both read and write, 4.5% could read but not write, and 23.3% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 73.5% reading and writing against 70.8% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (59), James, Patrick, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (67), followed by Bridget, Ellen, Catherine and Margaret.

Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 25.4% of all Rushes, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.
