The 1911 Census recorded 830 people named Crothers in Ireland; roughly one in every 5,300 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 417 men and 412 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Crothers literacy in 1911
Of the Crotherses whose literacy was recorded, 79.7% could both read and write, 3.8% could read but not write, and 16.5% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (50), Samuel, William, John and Thomas. For women it was Mary (31), followed by Elizabeth, Jane, Sarah and Margaret.

The most common entry on a Crothers's census form was "Scholar"; 24.1% (200) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (9%), farmer (5.4%), general labourer (5.1%) and metal worker / engineer (3.7%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 11.7% of all Crotherses, followed by agriculture, general labourers and metal & engineering.
What religion is Crothers?
Most Crotherses, 52.8%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (33.7%), Roman Catholic (6.7%), Congregationalist (2.3%) and Methodist (2.2%).
