Of the Scallys whose literacy was recorded, 78.9% could both read and write, 4.3% could read but not write, and 16.8% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 82.7% reading and writing against 75.5% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (74), Patrick, Thomas, Michael and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (69), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Anne and Kate.

The most common occupation among Scallys was farmer, 24.2% of them (201 people). Next came scholar / student (16.7%), general labourer (5.7%), farm labourer (4.8%) and domestic servant (3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 30.2% of all Scallys, followed by general labourers, domestic service and retail & commerce.

Scallys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 96.3% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (2.8%) and Presbyterian (0.1%).
