Nee in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 818 people named Nee in Ireland; roughly one in every 5,400 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 425 men and 392 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

The Nees were heavily concentrated in Galway, home to 87.8% of them (718 people). Next came Donegal (38), Westmeath (28), Mayo (18) and Clare (13).

The average Nee in 1911 was 28.9 years old, 28.3 for men and 29.4 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Nee literacy in 1911
Of the Nees whose literacy was recorded, 56% could both read and write, 5% could read but not write, and 39% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 58.8% reading and writing against 53.1% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (64), Michael, Patrick, Thomas and Martin. For women it was Mary (107), followed by Bridget, Barbara, Annie and Kate.

The most common occupation among Nees was farmer, 24.4% of them (200 people). Next came scholar / student (21.8%), general labourer (2.4%), farm labourer (2.2%) and domestic servant (1.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 27.4% of all Nees, followed by general labourers, domestic service and building & construction.
What religion is Nee?
Nees were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.8% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1%).
