Men came out slightly ahead, 81.2% reading and writing against 77.4% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (40), John, Thomas, William and Robert. For women it was Elizabeth (25), followed by Mary, Jane, Lizzie and Agnes.

The most common entry on a McComb's census form was "Scholar"; 19.1% (142) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.2%), textile worker (6.3%), general labourer (5%) and domestic servant (2.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 13.7% of all McCombs, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is McComb?
The largest religious group among McCombs was Presbyterian, at 48.2%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (34%), Roman Catholic (12%), Non-Conformist (0.9%) and Protestant (0.9%).
