Men came out slightly ahead, 81.2% reading and writing against 77.4% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.2%), textile worker (6.3%), general labourer (5%) and domestic servant (2.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 13.7% of all McCombs, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.

The largest religious group among McCombs was Presbyterian, at 48.2%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (34%), Roman Catholic (12%), Non-Conformist (0.9%) and Protestant (0.9%).
