That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Hyde literacy in 1911
Of the Hydes whose literacy was recorded, 82.2% could both read and write, 2.6% could read but not write, and 15.2% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (48), William, Michael, James and Thomas. For women it was Mary (42), followed by Margaret, Sarah, Ellen and Elizabeth.

The most common entry on a Hyde's census form was "Scholar"; 18.8% (131) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.9%), general labourer (4.7%), textile worker (3.9%) and farm labourer (3.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 15.8% of all Hydes, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Hyde?
Most Hydes, 59.3%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (30.9%), Presbyterian (6.8%), Methodist (0.7%) and Quaker (0.1%).
