Lockhart literacy in 1911
Of the Lockharts whose literacy was recorded, 83.9% could both read and write, 5.1% could read but not write, and 11% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.1%), textile worker (5.4%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.9%) and general labourer (2.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.7% of all Lockharts, followed by textiles & clothing, retail & commerce and general labourers.

Most Lockharts, 51%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (28.7%), Methodist (8.2%), Roman Catholic (7.1%) and Unitarian (1.9%).
