The 1911 Census recorded 638 people named Keely in Ireland; roughly one in every 6,900 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 344 men and 293 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Dublin was Keely country: 29.6% of them (189 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Galway (162), Monaghan (54), Meath (30) and Wicklow (25).

Keely average age in 1911
The average Keely in 1911 was 30.1 years old, 30.6 for men and 29.4 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Keely literacy in 1911
Of the Keelys whose literacy was recorded, 78.8% could both read and write, 2.8% could read but not write, and 18.4% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 81.9% reading and writing against 76.2% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (46), Patrick, James, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (49), followed by Bridget, Ellen, Catherine and Margaret.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13.9%), general labourer (5%), domestic servant (3.8%) and farm labourer (3.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.3% of all Keelys, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
