The 1911 Census recorded 607 people named Carberry in Ireland; roughly one in every 7,200 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 283 men and 324 women.

Dublin had the largest share of Carberrys, 23.1% (140 people). Next came Antrim (62), Meath (51), Waterford (47) and Wexford (37).

The average Carberry in 1911 was 30.2 years old, 30.4 for men and 30.0 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Carberry literacy in 1911
Of the Carberrys whose literacy was recorded, 72.4% could both read and write, 7.8% could read but not write, and 19.6% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 73.5% reading and writing against 71.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Carberry common first names
The most common male names were John (39), Patrick, James, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (54), followed by Bridget, Annie, Margaret and Elizabeth.
Carberry occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Carberry's census form was "Scholar"; 17.8% (108) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13.2%), general labourer (7.1%), domestic servant (4.4%) and farm labourer (3.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 17.5% of all Carberrys, followed by general labourers, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Carberry?
Carberrys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 94.6% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (5.1%).
