The 1911 Census recorded 604 people named Harney in Ireland; roughly one in every 7,300 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 306 men and 298 women.

Roscommon had the largest share of Harneys, 19.2% (116 people). Next came Tipperary (108), Waterford (107), Galway (75) and Dublin (49).

The average Harney in 1911 was 29.9 years old, 28.9 for men and 30.9 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Harney literacy in 1911
Of the Harneys whose literacy was recorded, 76.6% could both read and write, 4.1% could read but not write, and 19.3% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (55), Patrick, Michael, Thomas and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (56), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Kate and Catherine.

The most common entry on a Harney's census form was "Scholar"; 19% (115) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16.6%), farm labourer (5.3%), general labourer (3.1%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 22.2% of all Harneys, followed by textiles & clothing, retail & commerce and general labourers.
What religion is Harney?
Harneys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 99.7% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.2%) and Presbyterian (0.2%).
