The 1911 Census recorded 603 people named Cousins in Ireland; roughly one in every 7,300 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 287 men and 316 women.

Down was Cousins country: 36.5% of them (220 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Wexford (136), Antrim (107), Dublin (50) and Tyrone (26).

The average Cousins in 1911 was 29.0 years old, 28.3 for men and 29.6 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Cousins literacy in 1911
Of the Cousinses whose literacy was recorded, 76.5% could both read and write, 4% could read but not write, and 19.3% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Cousins common first names
The most common male names were James (35), John, Robert, William and Thomas. For women it was Mary (29), followed by Annie, Elizabeth, Sarah and Ellen.
Cousins occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Cousins's census form was "Scholar"; 20.1% (121) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (6.6%), textile worker (5.5%), farm labourer (4.5%) and general labourer (3.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 11.6% of all Cousinses, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.
What religion is Cousins?
The largest religious group among Cousinses was Roman Catholic, at 45.1%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (27.2%), Presbyterian (20.7%), Methodist (3.3%) and Plymouth Brethren (2.2%).
