The 1911 Census recorded 570 people named Singleton in Ireland; roughly one in every 7,700 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 270 men and 299 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Cork was Singleton country: 28.1% of them (160 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Dublin (97), Antrim (64), Armagh (58) and Down (44).

The average Singleton in 1911 was 29.9 years old, 29.7 for men and 30.1 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Singleton literacy in 1911
Of the Singletons whose literacy was recorded, 79.1% could both read and write, 3% could read but not write, and 17.9% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 83% reading and writing against 75.6% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Singleton common first names
The most common male names were John (34), Thomas, Joseph, Michael and William. For women it was Mary (36), followed by Margaret, Elizabeth, Ellen and Annie.
Singleton occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Singleton's census form was "Scholar"; 20.4% (116) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (7.7%), general labourer (7.5%), textile worker (5.3%) and domestic servant (4.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 11.1% of all Singletons, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Singleton?
Most Singletons, 56.5%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (37.5%), Presbyterian (4%) and Methodist (1.8%).
