The 1911 Census recorded 568 people named Marley in Ireland; roughly one in every 7,700 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 280 men and 287 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Of the Marleys whose literacy was recorded, 70.3% could both read and write, 4.9% could read but not write, and 24.6% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (49), Patrick, Michael, James and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (43), followed by Bridget, Catherine, Annie and Elizabeth.

The most common occupation among Marleys was farmer, 21.1% of them (120 people). Next came scholar / student (18.7%), general labourer (5.3%), textile worker (3.7%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 23.2% of all Marleys, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Marley?
Marleys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 97.7% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.4%), Presbyterian (0.2%) and Protestant (0.2%).
