The 1911 Census recorded 565 people named Cummings in Ireland; roughly one in every 7,800 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 278 men and 286 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Antrim was Cummings country: 35.2% of them (199 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Down (111), Armagh (69), Tyrone (44) and Dublin (40).

The average Cummings in 1911 was 29.1 years old, 28.3 for men and 30.0 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Cummings literacy in 1911
Of the Cummingses whose literacy was recorded, 81% could both read and write, 4.2% could read but not write, and 14.9% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (7.1%), textile worker (6.4%), general labourer (6%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.4%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 9.6% of all Cummingses, followed by agriculture, general labourers and domestic service.

The largest religious group among Cummingses was Anglican, at 35.2%. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (34.7%), Roman Catholic (19.1%), Methodist (4.4%) and Baptist (1.8%).
