Commins in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 532 people named Commins in Ireland; roughly one in every 8,300 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 285 men and 242 women. (A small number, 5, had no sex recorded.)

Galway was Commins country: 32.7% of them (174 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Mayo (71), Tipperary (53), Offaly (50) and Dublin (26).
Commins average age in 1911
The average Commins in 1911 was 29.1 years old, 28.4 for men and 29.9 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Commins literacy in 1911
Of the Comminses whose literacy was recorded, 74.7% could both read and write, 3.5% could read but not write, and 21.8% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 77.1% reading and writing against 73.2% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Commins common first names
The most common male names were Patrick (45), John, Michael, Thomas and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (52), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Catherine and Kate.
Commins occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Commins's census form was "Scholar"; 25.8% (137) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (23.9%), general labourer (3.6%), farm labourer (2.1%) and domestic servant (1.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 25.9% of all Comminses, followed by general labourers, domestic service and professional.
What religion is Commins?
Comminses were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 94.4% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (3.2%).
