That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Gillan literacy in 1911
Of the Gillans whose literacy was recorded, 74.6% could both read and write, 4.9% could read but not write, and 20.5% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 77.2% reading and writing against 72.1% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (40), James, Patrick, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (37), followed by Bridget, Annie, Margaret and Ellen; matching the national top five exactly.

The most common entry on a Gillan's census form was "Scholar"; 22.9% (117) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (18.4%), general labourer (4.3%), textile worker (2.9%) and farm labourer (2.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 21.1% of all Gillans, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Gillan?
Gillans were predominantly Roman Catholic (80%). The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (10.8%), Methodist (4.7%), Anglican (1.6%) and Plymouth Brethren (1.6%).
