The Sproules were heavily concentrated in Tyrone, home to 54.2% of them (269 people). Next came Donegal (61), Antrim (38), Dublin (30) and Monaghan (14).

Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13.1%), farm labourer (5.4%), seamstress (4.4%) and domestic servant (3.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19% of all Sproules, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and professional.
What religion is Sproule?
The largest religious group among Sproules was Anglican, at 43.5%. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (30.6%), Methodist (13.3%), Roman Catholic (10.3%) and Plymouth Brethren (1.2%).
