The 1911 Census recorded 476 people named Latimer in Ireland; roughly one in every 9,200 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 238 men and 238 women.

Fermanagh had the largest share of Latimers, 20.8% (99 people). Next came Antrim (74), Dublin (67), Cavan (56) and Down (32).

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Latimer literacy in 1911
Of the Latimers whose literacy was recorded, 83.3% could both read and write, 2.8% could read but not write, and 14% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 84.4% reading and writing against 82.1% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (30), William, Robert, James and Thomas. For women it was Mary (14), followed by Jane, Sarah, Ellen and Margaret.

The most common entry on a Latimer's census form was "Scholar"; 22.7% (108) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.1%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.6%), textile worker (3.6%) and farm labourer (2.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 15.1% of all Latimers, followed by textiles & clothing, retail & commerce and domestic service.
What religion is Latimer?
Most Latimers, 60.3%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (18.1%), Roman Catholic (9.9%), Methodist (9.2%) and Plymouth Brethren (0.6%).
