The 1911 Census recorded 447 people named Wolfe in Ireland; roughly one in every 9,800 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 217 men and 228 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)

The Wolfes were heavily concentrated in Cork, home to 50.3% of them (225 people). Next came Dublin (72), Louth (15), Tipperary (14) and Down (13).

The average Wolfe in 1911 was 30.0 years old, 27.1 for men and 32.9 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Wolfe literacy in 1911
Of the Wolfes whose literacy was recorded, 85.4% could both read and write, 2.8% could read but not write, and 11.8% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 87.3% reading and writing against 83.3% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (21), William, John, Joseph and Michael. For women it was Mary (19), followed by Annie, Elizabeth, Margaret and Eliza.

The most common entry on a Wolfe's census form was "Scholar"; 22.1% (99) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.6%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (5.6%), general labourer (2.5%) and clerk / office worker (1.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.1% of all Wolfes, followed by retail & commerce, domestic service and professional.
What religion is Wolfe?
The largest religious group among Wolfes was Anglican, at 45.2%. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (34.5%), Methodist (13.4%), Presbyterian (2.5%) and Jewish (2.2%).
