Franklin in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 443 people named Franklin in Ireland; roughly one in every 9,900 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 220 men and 222 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Franklin in Ireland
Limerick had the largest share of Franklins, 22.1% (98 people). Next came Dublin (92), Wexford (62), Tipperary (46) and Cork (41).
Franklin average age in 1911
The average Franklin in 1911 was 28.3 years old, 27.9 for men and 28.7 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Franklin literacy in 1911
Of the Franklins whose literacy was recorded, 76.7% could both read and write, 4.8% could read but not write, and 18.5% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 78.3% reading and writing against 75.1% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Franklin common first names
The most common male names were John (28), Patrick, William, Thomas and Michael. For women it was Mary (28), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Ellen and Johanna.
Franklin occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Franklin's census form was "Scholar"; 20.1% (89) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (7%), general labourer (3.8%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.7%) and domestic servant (2.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 9.5% of all Franklins, followed by general labourers, retail & commerce and domestic service.
What religion is Franklin?
Franklins were predominantly Roman Catholic (78.8%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (18.5%), Congregationalist (0.9%), Methodist (0.9%) and Baptist (0.2%).
