The 1911 Census recorded 426 people named Frain in Ireland; roughly one in every 10,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 230 men and 196 women.

The Frains were heavily concentrated in Mayo, home to 66.4% of them (283 people). Next came Roscommon (110), Sligo (23), Waterford (3) and Antrim (2).

The average Frain in 1911 was 33.8 years old, 32.9 for men and 35.0 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Frain literacy in 1911
Of the Frains whose literacy was recorded, 73.4% could both read and write, 5.8% could read but not write, and 20.9% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Frain common first names
The most common male names were John (41), Thomas, Patrick, Michael and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Bridget (45), followed by Mary, Catherine, Ellen and Anne.
Frain occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among Frains was farmer, 34.5% of them (147 people). Next came scholar / student (15.3%), farm labourer (4.5%), general labourer (3.3%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 39% of all Frains, followed by general labourers, retail & commerce and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Frain?
Frains were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.8% of them.
