The 1911 Census recorded 404 people named Clune in Ireland; roughly one in every 11,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 206 men and 197 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Clune in Ireland
The Clunes were heavily concentrated in Clare, home to 80.9% of them (327 people). Next came Limerick (34), Dublin (13), Galway (8) and Cork (7).
Clune average age in 1911
The average Clune in 1911 was 30.8 years old, 30.8 for men and 30.7 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Clune literacy in 1911
Of the Clunes whose literacy was recorded, 89.7% could both read and write, 1.5% could read but not write, and 8.7% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 91.9% reading and writing against 87.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Clune common first names
The most common male names were John (38), Michael, Patrick, James and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (37), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Anne and Catherine.
Clune occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Clune's census form was "Scholar"; 22.8% (92) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (22.3%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.7%), farm labourer (2.2%) and teacher (2.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 24.5% of all Clunes, followed by retail & commerce, professional and domestic service.
What religion is Clune?
Clunes were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 97.3% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.2%).
