Of the Cardwells whose literacy was recorded, 75.2% could both read and write, 5.6% could read but not write, and 19.2% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 76.8% reading and writing against 73.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Most Cardwells, 58.8%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (17.9%), Roman Catholic (11.6%), Methodist (6.1%) and Plymouth Brethren (2.3%).
