Women came out slightly ahead, 58.4% reading and writing against 51.9% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (18%), farm labourer (5.3%), textile worker (2.6%) and general labourer (2.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 24.3% of all McGroartys, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.

McGroartys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.9% of them. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (1.1%).
