The 1911 Census recorded 374 people named Hearty in Ireland; roughly one in every 12,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 192 men and 181 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

The Heartys were heavily concentrated in Armagh, home to 54% of them (202 people). Next came Louth (117), Monaghan (12), Antrim (8) and Dublin (8).
Hearty average age in 1911
The average Hearty in 1911 was 32.3 years old, 32.0 for men and 32.6 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Hearty literacy in 1911
Of the Heartys whose literacy was recorded, 70.5% could both read and write, 6.2% could read but not write, and 23.2% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Hearty common first names
The most common male names were Patrick (35), Michael, John, Thomas and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (36), followed by Bridget, Annie, Anne and Maggie.
Hearty occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Hearty's census form was "Scholar"; 20.1% (75) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (17.1%), domestic servant (7.5%), general labourer (6.1%) and farm labourer (5.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 22.5% of all Heartys, followed by domestic service, general labourers and transport.
What religion is Hearty?
Heartys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.9% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.8%) and Presbyterian (0.3%).
