The 1911 Census recorded 374 people named Stirling in Ireland; roughly one in every 12,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 180 men and 194 women.

The Stirlings were heavily concentrated in Antrim, home to 57.2% of them (214 people). Next came Derry (96), Down (34), Dublin (22) and Cork (2).

The average Stirling in 1911 was 30.8 years old, 27.6 for men and 33.8 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Stirling literacy in 1911
Of the Stirlings whose literacy was recorded, 83.7% could both read and write, 5% could read but not write, and 11.4% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (27), William, Robert, John and Joseph. For women it was Mary (18), followed by Elizabeth, Jane, Sarah and Margaret.

The most common entry on a Stirling's census form was "Scholar"; 18.7% (70) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.4%), farm labourer (5.3%), general labourer (3.5%) and domestic servant (3.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.3% of all Stirlings, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and retail & commerce.
What religion is Stirling?
Most Stirlings, 67.4%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (20.9%), Methodist (4.5%), Roman Catholic (2.9%) and Congregationalist (0.5%).
