The 1911 Census recorded 353 people named Feeny in Ireland; roughly one in every 12,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 167 men and 185 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Derry was Feeny country: 27.8% of them (98 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Roscommon (77), Galway (40), Sligo (35) and Mayo (33).

The average Feeny in 1911 was 29.3 years old, 28.2 for men and 30.4 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Feeny literacy in 1911
Of the Feenys whose literacy was recorded, 69.4% could both read and write, 4.4% could read but not write, and 26.2% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 73.3% reading and writing against 65.9% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (25), John, Patrick, Michael and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Bridget (33), followed by Mary, Kate, Catherine and Annie.
Feeny occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Feeny's census form was "Scholar"; 23.2% (82) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16.7%), general labourer (3.7%), domestic servant (3.4%) and farm labourer (3.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20.7% of all Feenys, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.
