The 1911 Census recorded 351 people named O'Keefe in Ireland; roughly one in every 13,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more women than men recorded: 197 women to 153 men. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Cork had the largest share of O'Keefes, 20.5% (72 people). Next came Dublin (63), Limerick (33), Tipperary (26) and Clare (24).

The average O'Keefe in 1911 was 29.8 years old, 30.1 for men and 29.5 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
O'Keefe literacy in 1911
Of the O'Keefes whose literacy was recorded, 83.2% could both read and write, 2.1% could read but not write, and 14.7% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (23), Patrick, Michael, James and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (29), followed by Margaret, Bridget, Ellen and Annie; matching the national top five exactly.
O'Keefe occupations in 1911
The most common entry on an O'Keefe's census form was "Scholar"; 14% (49) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were domestic servant (9.1%), farmer (7.7%), farm labourer (5.1%) and general labourer (4.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 13.7% of all O'Keefes, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is O'Keefe?
O'Keefes were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 97.2% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (2.6%).
