The 1911 Census recorded 333 people named Birmingham in Ireland; roughly one in every 13,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more men than women recorded: 189 men to 141 women. (A small number, 3, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Birmingham in Ireland
Galway had the largest share of Birminghams, 21.3% (71 people). Next came Dublin (66), Cork (44), Offaly (21) and Limerick (19).
Birmingham average age in 1911
The average Birmingham in 1911 was 31.7 years old, 29.0 for men and 35.2 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Birmingham literacy in 1911
Of the Birminghams whose literacy was recorded, 76.2% could both read and write, 2.2% could read but not write, and 21.6% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Birmingham common first names
The most common male names were John (31), Patrick, Thomas, James and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (29), followed by Ellen, Bridget, Catherine and Margaret.
Birmingham occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among Birminghams was farmer, 17.7% of them (59 people). Next came scholar / student (17.1%), general labourer (4.2%), domestic servant (3.9%) and farm labourer (3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 21.3% of all Birminghams, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Birmingham?
Birminghams were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 93.1% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (3.3%) and Baptist (1.8%).
