The 1911 Census recorded 328 people named McGahan in Ireland; roughly one in every 13,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 171 men and 157 women.

Of the McGahans whose literacy was recorded, 73% could both read and write, 5.7% could read but not write, and 21.3% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 75.3% reading and writing against 70.6% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common occupation among McGahans was farmer, 20.7% of them (68 people). Next came scholar / student (13.7%), farm labourer (5.5%), general labourer (4.3%) and retired / pensioner (2.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 26.8% of all McGahans, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.

McGahans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 99.1% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.3%) and Presbyterian (0.3%).
