Carley literacy in 1911
Of the Carleys whose literacy was recorded, 76.8% could both read and write, 4.5% could read but not write, and 18.6% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 78.4% reading and writing against 75.3% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (18), James, Michael, Patrick and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (17), followed by Bridget, Annie, Catherine and Margaret.

The most common entry on a Carley's census form was "Scholar"; 17.4% (57) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.4%), general labourer (8.3%), domestic servant (3.1%) and farm labourer (2.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 17.4% of all Carleys, followed by general labourers, domestic service and transport.
What religion is Carley?
Carleys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 91.7% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (5.2%) and Presbyterian (2.4%).
