McAtamney literacy in 1911
Of the McAtamneys whose literacy was recorded, 63.7% could both read and write, 11.1% could read but not write, and 25.2% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 67.6% reading and writing against 60.2% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (22), John, William, Joseph and Daniel. For women it was Mary (16), followed by Jane, Margaret, Maggie and Elizabeth.

The most common entry on a McAtamney's census form was "Scholar"; 14.9% (47) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.1%), textile worker (9.5%), general labourer (8.2%) and farm labourer (6.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18% of all McAtamneys, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is McAtamney?
McAtamneys were predominantly Roman Catholic (81.6%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (8.9%), Presbyterian (8.2%) and Baptist (1.3%).
