The 1911 Census recorded 315 people named Buttimer in Ireland; roughly one in every 14,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 152 men and 162 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

The Buttimers were heavily concentrated in Cork, home to 98.4% of them (310 people). Next came Dublin (3), Down (1) and Kerry (1).

The average Buttimer in 1911 was 27.7 years old, 26.8 for men and 28.5 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Buttimer literacy in 1911
Of the Buttimers whose literacy was recorded, 79.3% could both read and write, 5.7% could read but not write, and 15% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (28), Thomas, Jeremiah, William and Denis. For women it was Mary (20), followed by Julia, Kate, Ellen and Hannah.

The most common entry on a Buttimer's census form was "Scholar"; 21.3% (67) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (19%), farm labourer (3.2%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.5%) and domestic servant (1.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 22.2% of all Buttimers, followed by retail & commerce, domestic service and general labourers.
What religion is Buttimer?
Most Buttimers, 63.5%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (21.3%), Methodist (6.7%), Protestant (3.8%) and Non-Conformist (2.2%).
