That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Hough literacy in 1911
Of the Houghs whose literacy was recorded, 82.3% could both read and write, 2.3% could read but not write, and 15.4% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 87.6% reading and writing against 77.5% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (29), Patrick, Michael, James and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (26), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Ellen and Sarah.

The most common occupation among Houghs was farmer, 23.6% of them (74 people). Next came scholar / student (20.7%), farm labourer (7.6%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.5%) and domestic servant (1.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 31.8% of all Houghs, followed by retail & commerce, domestic service and building & construction.
What religion is Hough?
Houghs were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 95.5% of them. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (2.9%) and Anglican (1.6%).
