The 1911 Census recorded 311 people named Britton in Ireland; roughly one in every 14,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 156 men and 154 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Tipperary had the largest share of Brittons, 19.6% (61 people). Next came Fermanagh (45), Donegal (35), Tyrone (33) and Wexford (31).

The average Britton in 1911 was 31.5 years old, 29.4 for men and 33.6 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Britton literacy in 1911
Of the Brittons whose literacy was recorded, 81.2% could both read and write, 3% could read but not write, and 15.8% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 82.4% reading and writing against 80.1% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Britton common first names
The most common male names were John (21), James, Patrick, William and Richard. For women it was Mary (20), followed by Annie, Bridget, Margaret and Ellen; matching the national top five exactly.
Britton occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Britton's census form was "Scholar"; 18.3% (57) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (17.7%), domestic servant (3.9%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.9%) and general labourer (2.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19.9% of all Brittons, followed by domestic service, retail & commerce and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Britton?
Most Brittons, 58.5%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (25.1%), Presbyterian (12.2%), Methodist (3.2%) and Unitarian (0.3%).
