The 1911 Census recorded 305 people named Raleigh in Ireland; roughly one in every 14,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 154 men and 151 women.

The Raleighs were heavily concentrated in Limerick, home to 53.8% of them (164 people). Next came Tipperary (27), Westmeath (26), Meath (24) and Offaly (19).

The average Raleigh in 1911 was 28.3 years old, 28.7 for men and 28.0 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Raleigh literacy in 1911
Of the Raleighs whose literacy was recorded, 83.4% could both read and write, 2.4% could read but not write, and 14.1% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 85.7% reading and writing against 81.1% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Raleigh common first names
The most common male names were John (23), Patrick, James, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (35), followed by Bridget, Ellen, Kate and Margaret.
Raleigh occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Raleigh's census form was "Scholar"; 25.9% (79) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13.1%), general labourer (4.6%), domestic servant (3%) and farm labourer (2.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.4% of all Raleighs, followed by general labourers, domestic service and retail & commerce.
