Maye average age in 1911

The average Maye in 1911 was 33.1 years old, 30.1 for men and 36.8 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Maye literacy in 1911

Of the Mayes whose literacy was recorded, 77.7% could both read and write, 4.1% could read but not write, and 18.2% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 79.5% reading and writing against 76.3% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Maye common first names

The most common male names were John (30), Michael, James, Patrick and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Bridget (21), followed by Mary, Ellen, Margaret and Annie; matching the national top five exactly.

The most common occupation among Mayes was farmer, 27.2% of them (82 people). Next came scholar / student (17.2%), farm labourer (4.6%), domestic servant (2%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 31.8% of all Mayes, followed by domestic service, retail & commerce and building & construction.
