Women came out slightly ahead, 79.5% reading and writing against 76.3% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (30), Michael, James, Patrick and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Bridget (21), followed by Mary, Ellen, Margaret and Annie; matching the national top five exactly.

Next came scholar / student (17.2%), farm labourer (4.6%), domestic servant (2%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 31.8% of all Mayes, followed by domestic service, retail & commerce and building & construction.

Mayes were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 91.4% of them. The remainder were mostly Methodist (1%).
