Of the Merrimans whose literacy was recorded, 76.9% could both read and write, 2.4% could read but not write, and 20.6% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 78.4% reading and writing against 75.7% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (27), William, James, Michael and Patrick. For women it was Mary (22), followed by Bridget, Annie, Elizabeth and Margaret.

The most common entry on a Merriman's census form was "Scholar"; 25.8% (77) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (7.7%), general labourer (6.7%), farm labourer (4.7%) and domestic servant (3.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.7% of all Merrimans, followed by general labourers, domestic service and transport.
What religion is Merriman?
Merrimans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 91.3% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (8.7%).
