That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
McMillen literacy in 1911
Of the McMillens whose literacy was recorded, 83.2% could both read and write, 3.1% could read but not write, and 13.6% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 84.4% reading and writing against 82% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Thomas (18), James, Samuel, Robert and John. For women it was Mary (11), followed by Agnes, Sarah, Maggie and Annie.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (8.4%), farmer (4.4%), farm labourer (3.4%) and other maker / factory worker (3.4%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 12.1% of all McMillens, followed by agriculture, manufacturing & trades and domestic service.
What religion is McMillen?
Most McMillens, 55.4%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (24.2%), Congregationalist (5.7%), Roman Catholic (4%) and Methodist (3.4%).
