The 1911 Census recorded 293 people named Galloway in Ireland; roughly one in every 15,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 154 men and 138 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Antrim was Galloway country: 39.9% of them (117 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Down (95), Dublin (20), Derry (12) and Sligo (10).
Galloway average age in 1911
The average Galloway in 1911 was 30.2 years old, 28.9 for men and 31.7 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Galloway literacy in 1911
Of the Galloways whose literacy was recorded, 77.9% could both read and write, 3.9% could read but not write, and 18.2% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 79.9% reading and writing against 76.2% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Galloway common first names
The most common male names were James (28), John, William, Robert and Thomas. For women it was Mary (15), followed by Jane, Lizzie, Elizabeth and Jessie.
Galloway occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Galloway's census form was "Scholar"; 18.4% (54) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farm labourer (8.9%), general labourer (6.5%), farmer (5.1%) and textile worker (4.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.3% of all Galloways, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Galloway?
Most Galloways, 51.9%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (33.4%), Roman Catholic (7.8%), Methodist (2.7%) and Protestant (0.7%).
